How high is your bicycle seat supposed to be?
I know the frame between the seat and the bars is supposed to touch your groin area when you stand up… but what about the seat? Some people tell me to raise my seat up. You’re supposed to stand at the frame, pedal and jump up to your seat… But there is a lot of traffic… and I read one of the bike laws that said you should be able to stand when your bike is stationary… so? how high guys?
Unfortunately both of those are wrong.
On a road bike, standing over the frame, you should have 1″ of clearance between top tube and crotch. On a mountain-type bike this increases to 3-5″ depending on how the bike is made.
The saddle height should be so that when you are sitting on the saddle with your feet on the pedal, and one of your feet at the bottom of the pedal stroke that your knee should be slightly bent. You should NOT be able to sit on the saddle and touch the ground flatfooted.
The first part of the answer should tell you where you should be standing when you are stationary… to mount the saddle, have the right side (drive side) pedal at the 2:00 position- in front of you- then place your foot on the pedal and push off, hoisting yourself onto the seat. It really takes much more to explain this than to actually do it.
